I’m sure this is one speech that virtually everyone has either listened to or can quote from.
An email from TED Talks this evening recommended I watch it. So I did for the umpteenth time.
Surrounded by horrific news daily, this is the best time to listen to a speech that TED captioned: How to live before you die.
Major points from the speech:
– You can only connect the dots of your life’s journey looking backwards. You have to trust, as you make each decision, in something- your gut, destiny, life, karma, God (Steve didn’t say that last one, but I’ve added it for him)
– Sometimes the most devastating losses can bring the greatest opportunities for creation, re-invention, indulging your curiosities and doing what you love.
– Being successful is what we all desire, but it can lock you into patterns of thinking and behaviour that are restrictive as you strive to maintain your position. Being a beginner at something brings a lightness and frees you to be creative in new ways.
– When everything seems to go awry, doing what you love can be the one thing that keeps you going. There are people who dismiss the notion of following your passion as idealistic and naive, especially when it doesn’t pay. However very few people can argue with the fact that you are more likely to do well at the things you enjoy. And going into a job everyday that you hate crushes the spirit. There is always a happy medium in between.
– Remembering that death is the one destination we all have in common keeps you focused on the things that are most important to you.
– Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma and let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. Have the courage to follow your heart and intuition, because somehow they already know what you truly want to become.
– Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish.
